Protecting nature is the first step.
The impact of destructive activities, pollution and climate change is acutely felt in ocean habitats, driving rapid biodiversity loss. Environments which are still healthy need protection to stay that way, while ecosystems impacted by human activities need to be preserved in order to recover.
Marine protected areas (MPAs) and nature reserves which are strongly protected can help restore biodiversity, which in turn, enables natural ecosystems to be more resilient to external pressures and climate change, and continue to provide invaluable services to humanity.
What is 30X30?
30×30 is a global campaign to protect at least 30 per cent of the world’s ocean by 2030, through highly protected MPAs and other effective conservation measures (OECMs).
Sails of Change supports this call by scientists and experts to strongly protect our planet.
Reaching this #30×30 target would be a big step towards making our planet sustainable, allowing biodiversity to regenerate, and contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
As of September 2021, more than 100 countries have publicly committed to support this
30×30 goal, as part of the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People or the Global Ocean Alliance.
Where do we currently stand?
The Marine Protection Atlas integrates science-based assessments that measure progress toward protecting 30% of the global ocean in fully and highly protected areas by 2030.
Currently, 2.7% of the ocean is fully or highly protected from fishing impacts, and 7.7 % of the ocean is protected according to WDPA / ProtectedPlanet.
