The Sails of Change maxi-trimaran bears the messag The Sails of Change maxi-trimaran bears the message of « 30x30 », highlighting the need to protect 30% of land and ocean by 2030.

The boat was hoping to sail around the world non-stop this winter, but the weather conditions were unfavorable.

Rather than fighting against Mother Nature, Sails of Change will set sail to different horizons, with the same mission to raise awareness of the need to protect biodiversity.

We’ll keep you updated on the boat’s progress – maybe it will visit your part of the world! 🌍

Nothing like a small getaway with the technical team of the Maxi Trimaran @sailsofchange to reconnect with nature.

As you know, the foreshore is the area where the tides sway. Eva, @spindrift_for_schools science & environment animator, showed the team during low tide the diversity of this ecosystem we must protect at all costs 🌍

Have you ever seen all these species? 🔎

To protect the ocean, we need up-to-date and accur To protect the ocean, we need up-to-date and accurate data on ocean health. In remote areas such as the #SouthernOcean and #Antarctica, accurate scientific data is hard to come by. That makes it difficult to assess the impact of climate change and human activity on #biodiversity.

@SailsOfChange is setting out to expand our knowledge of #ocean health. Our boat has been equipped with onboard sensors to capture precious environmental and #climate data. As we sail, we’ll be measuring sea temperatures, as well as levels of carbon dioxide, microplastics, chlorophyll and salt.

We’ll be publishing this data on our website, and we’ll work with a scientific consortium to analyse and make full use of the findings.

In this way, we hope Sails of Change’s round-the-world voyage can contribute to our scientific understanding of ocean health.

We urgently need to change humanity’s relationsh We urgently need to change humanity’s relationship with the ocean. Here are 5 takeaways from @IMPAC5canada :

1. Deep-Sea Mining: the environmental risks far outweigh the potential economic returns

2. Indigenous Peoples should be the lead in the management of marine protected areas

3. We need durable financial mechanisms to fund marine protected areas to ensure effective conservation and #30X30

4. Youth can and must play a key role in protecting the ocean

5. We need a connected global network of marine protected areas for nature and people

What is a Marine Protected Area ? An MPA is part o What is a Marine Protected Area ?
An MPA is part of the ocean where human activities are limited in order to protect and restore nature. There are more than 5,000 MPAs. They represents 7% of the global ocean of which 3% is fully or highly protected.

Why do we need MPAs?
The ocean sustains life on our planet. Today, human activity is damaging the ocean, through overfishing, pollution and climate change. We see significant declines in the populations of marine species, and significant destruction of marine habitats.

How do MPAs benefit the ocean?
Scientists tell us that properly managed Marine Protected Areas can:
• Boost fish populations, protecting migrating species, and maintaining stable ecosystems
• Help the ocean recover from the impact of extractive activities such as overfishing
• Make the ocean more resilient to climate change

How do MPAs benefit people?
• They help protect jobs and livelihoods for coastal communities which depend on the ocean
• They strengthen connections between Indigenous communities and the ocean, and protect Indigenous culture
• A healthy ocean provides nutritious food for billions of people worldwide

The science is clear: #MPAs protect and restore biodiversity as well as support people and nature.
Starting today, professionals, scientists, indigen Starting today, professionals, scientists, indigenous people, community leaders and decision-makers will explore how to protect and restore marine ecosystems through Marine Protected Areas at #IMPAC5.

Happy #InternationalPolarBear day!

Did you know? Polar bears’ skin is black, and their fur is translucent – it only appears white because it reflects the light. And they can swim huge distances, for days on end.

We love you, polar bears!
